Washington, DC (August 12, 2009) –The Poker Players Alliance (PPA), the leading poker grassroots advocacy group with more than one million members nationwide and more than 13,000 in Colorado, today expressed its support for efforts to appeal a ruling in state intermediate court that poker is predominately a game of chance as part of Colorado v. Kevin Raley.

The Catalan Government (Generalitat de Catalunya) has filed appeals to the Supreme Court (sp. Tribunal Supremo (TS)) against two judgments of the High Court of Catalonia (sp. TSJC), which nullified two decrees in the field of gaming adopted by the government headed by Pasqual Maragall (former President of Catalonia).

Las Vegas Sands Corp. lost a bid Monday to set aside a USD 58.6 million judgment that a Clark County jury awarded Hong Kong businessman Richard Suen following a six-week civil trial. Rusty Hardin, the Houston-based attorney for Las Vegas Sands, said after nearly four hours of arguments that the case would be appealed to the Nevada Supreme Court.

The former owners of the Tropicana Casino & Resort „lacked financial integrity and responsibility, as well as business ability,“ and deserved to be stripped of their casino license, the New Jersey Supreme Court ruled unanimously last week. The decision, coming just eight days after the court heard oral arguments in the case, clears the way for a state-appointed trustee to sell the troubled gambling hall in a Bankruptcy Court auction.

Atlantic City is desperately in need of some positive news. Their casinos have been experiencing record slowdowns, and projects that were set to be finished have been put on hold. Tuesday, the news could get worse for the city. The New Jersey Supreme Court will rule whether the former owners of the Tropicana Casino and Resort were wrongly stripped of their license last December. Tropicana Entertainment LLC has appealed to the state Supreme Court after losing their license.

The Florida Supreme Court has overturned an agreement Gov. Charlie Crist signed with the Seminole Tribe to allow Las Vegas-style slot machines, baccarat, black jack and other card games at its facilities, which include the Hard Rock casinos in Tampa and Hollywood. The court ruled that Crist does not have the constitutional authority „to bind the state to a gaming compact that clearly departs from the state’s public policy by legalizing types of gaming that are illegal everywhere else in the state.“

Chicago (Reuters) – The Kansas Supreme Court ruled on Friday that a gambling law allowing state-owned casinos and slot parlors is constitutional, upholding a previous ruling on the law. The case was filed in 2007 by former Kansas Attorney General Paul Morrison on behalf of the state in an attempt to test the law’s constitutionality and clear any potential legal hurdles. The ruling means plans for casinos and slots owned by the state can go forward.
